Saturday, April 2, 2016, 7:00pm
Speed Art Museum Cinema
Directed by Christopher Kirkley
"Blissful, effervescent entertainment" -Jon Dieringer, Screen Slate
In this loose remake of Prince's Purple Rain by way of The Harder They Come, director and self-proclaimed "guerilla ethnomusicologist" Christopher Kirkley engages West African music in his striking film debut that is the first ever Tuareg-language film.
Guitar player and African music sensation Mdou Moctar stars as the purple motorcycle-riding musician tearing up the desert between home recording studios and guitar parties. A more affable analog to Prince's "The Kid," Moctar captures the character's ascent into the music scene with its unique social mores, religiosity, and third-world distribution models. 2015, Niger, video, in Tamashek and Tuareg with English subtitles, 75 minutes.
