“The film has a hypnotic pull, drawing the viewer deeper and deeper into its enigmatic adventure.” —Mark Olsen, Los Angeles Times

In one of the most emotionally devastating science-fiction films ever made, cosmonaut and psychologist Chris Kelvin (Donatas Banionis) ventures to a space station whose three remaining inhabitants have been attempting to make contact with the mysterious planet Solaris. He’s convinced that the crew has gone insane, until he sees his own startling apparitions.

Often described as a Soviet response to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space OdysseySolaris is a monolithic, enigmatic work of startling beauty and depth. Based on a novel by the Polish science-fiction writer Stanislaw Lem, the film challenges our conceptions of love, truth and humanity. This is a new digital restoration produced by Mosfilm from a 2K scan on the negative. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. 1972, USSR, 2K DCP, in Russian and German with English subtitles, 167 minutes. Rated PG.
