“Campion’s modern Western presses against a razor-thin membrane between gentleness and cruelty.”—Siddhant Adlakha, Observer

Through her adaption of Thomas Savage’s 1967 novel, director Jane Campion orchestrates a searing portrait of toxic masculinity set in the early 20th century across a visually breathtaking stretch of Montana.

Charismatic rancher Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch) inspires fear and awe in those around him. He’s a cowboy as raw as his hides. Quiet and cunning, he rules over the ranch along with his straight-arrow brother George (Jesse Plemons).

When George brings home a new wife (Kirsten Dunst) and her son (Kodi Smit-McPhee), Phil’s sense of place is upset, and he unleashes a calculated plan to undermine and intimidate the new family members.

What follows is a powerful drama that portrays the ruthlessness of the world against the weak and the vulnerable. In Campion’s visionary direction, the compassion, irony, and splendor of the story are exposed.

Campion was awarded Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival. 2021, U.S., DCP, 127 minutes. Rated R.
