“One of the greatest of all movies . . . No other film has so subtly linked eroticism with religious persecution.” —Pauline Kael

With its stunning camera work and striking compositions, Carl Th. Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc convinced the world that movies could be art. Renée Falconetti gives one of the greatest performances ever recorded on film as the young maiden who died for God and France. Long thought to have been lost to fire, the original version was miraculously found in perfect condition in 1981—in a Norwegian mental institution.

Each screening features a different score with a more traditional score for the early evening screening and a newly commissioned experimental score by members of the bands Portishead and Goldfrapp for the second.

Restored by Gaumont with funding from the Center National du Cinéma (CNC). The restoration was based on a preserved print created by La Cinémathèque Française for the 1985 reconstruction of the film, printed from a nitrate copy preserved and provided by the Danish Film Institute. 1928, France, DCP, silent with recorded musical score, 82 minutes.
