Directed by Georges Franju

“As absurd and as beautiful as a fairy tale.”—Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader

Combining the ghastly and the lyrical, the brilliant director Georges Franju creates a masterpiece of horror that served as an inspiration for decades to follow. A frothy mix of gore, terror, and beauty leaves an indelible mark on the psyche.

Holed up in his secluded French countryside chateau, a driven doctor attempts a radical experiment in plastic surgery to restore the beauty of his daughter who has been disfigured—at a disturbing price for each of them. 1962, France, Blu-ray, in French with English subtitles, 90 minutes. Recommended for 16+.

With Matthieu Dalle, Associare Professor of French, University of Louisville. Matthieu Dalle holds a PhD in French Civilization from The Pennsylvania State University and a Maîtrise and a Licence in Journalism from CELSA, the Communication and Journalism school at Université de la Sorbonne-Paris IV. His research interests include French media, contemporary French popular culture and cultural history, and post-World War II French cinema.
