“Stirring and gorgeous.” —Nick Schager, Variety

A moving and beautiful documentary from Academy Award-nominated director James Longley (Iraq in Fragments), Angels Are Made of Light traces the lives of young students and their teachers at the Daqiqi Balkhi School in the old city of Kabul. Interweaving the modern history of Afghanistan with present-day portraits, the film offers an intimate and nuanced vision of a society living in the shadow of war.

Longley shows the resistance and dedication that it takes for young boys to continue to attend school in an area that has endured decades of turmoil. Despite the crumbling infrastructure and the continual presence of U.S. forces—an American surveillance balloon suspends over the city—the young men and their teachers try to rebuild their lives. A selection of the Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. 2018, U.S., DCP, in English, Dari, Pushto, and Arabic with English subtitles, 117 minutes. Recommended for 13+.
