“Kristen Stewart is subtle and uncannily precise as the people’s princess.”—Charlotte O’Sullivan, The Evening Standard

Talk Cinema is back with one of the most anticipated films of the fall season. Kristen Stewart captivated audiences in her portrayal of Diana Spencer at the Venice Film Festival, the Telluride Film Festival, and the Toronto International Film Festival. Now is your first chance to see it in Louisville.

In Spencer, the marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles has long since grown cold. Though rumors of affairs and a divorce about, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate. There is a regimented schedule of meals, cocktails, shooting, and hunting. Diana knows what is expected, but his year, things will be profoundly different. Spencer is an imagining of what might have happened during those fateful days.

Stewart delivers a gripping performance of a woman whose every move is being monitored while desperately fighting for independence. Director Pablo Larraín brings a fresh approach to a figure who has been so deeply debated. With Jack Farthing, Sally Hawkins, and Timothy Spall. 2021, U.S., DCP, 99 minutes. Rated R.

Talk Cinema is programmed by the esteemed film critics and film curators Harlan and Susan Jacobson, featuring a sneak preview screening of an art house film prior to its release followed by a discussion. Be the first to see the latest films and to share your impressions.

Past films have included Portrait of a Lady on Fire, The Two Popes, The Farewell, Moonlight, Shoplifters, The Florida Project, and Lady Bird.
