Director in Person: Gloria Rolando Casamayor

“A beautifully constructed love letter.”—Pan African Film Festival

Gloria Rolando’s body of film work has primarily focused on the cross-sections of African and Caribbean roots of Cuban culture.  In this, her most recent film, she approaches her own family history detailing the close relationship she shared with her grandmother, Inocencia.  Through a first-person narrative, Rolando invites us in to the everyday life of a poor Cuban woman of African descent born in 1906.

Through a recorded interview from 1993, Rolando shows the changes that occurred over many decades and her grandmother’s relationship with poetry, nature, and Syncretic Spiritism (Espiritismo cruzado), and Congolese traditions and practices that are widespread through Cuba.  Her grandmother details a time marked by severe racial discrimination and violence against African descendants.

Rolando’s has been directing films for your 35 years at ICAIC, the Cuban National Film Institute and heading the independent filmmaking group, Imágenes del Caribe in Havana.  2015, Cuba, video, in Spanish with English subtitles, 40 minutes.

Co-presented with the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage.
