“Spectacular! Among the most thrilling movie experiences a viewer can have.” —Terrance Rafferty, New York Times
Coinciding with the display of the Shakespeare First Folio display at the Frazier History Museum, this new 4K restoration of the great Japanese director Akira Kurosawa’s adaptation of King Lear won an Oscar for Best Costume Design and received nominations for Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Art Direction.
Transposing the story to feudal Japan, an aging warlord makes the decision to abdicate as ruler and to split his kingdom between his three sons. While hoping that his sons will unify their efforts, a schism quickly ensues.
Ran was Kurosawa’s last epic production and was one of the most expensive Japanese productions at the time. 1985, France/Japan, DCP, in Japanese with English subtitles, 162 minutes.
