Directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda
“Undoubtedly one of Kore-eda’s best.”—John Beasdale, CineVue
From celebrated Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda (After Life, Still Walking), comes this powerful story of a family reconciling in the wake of a disaster. A formerly successful novelist works as a struggling detective under the pretense of doing research for his new novel. He blows his income on gambling which further estranges himself from his aging mother, ex-wife and 11-year-old son.
When a typhoon brings the family members together in his mother’s Tokyo apartment, their roles are tested as they are given a chance to truly bond again with one another.
A selection of the Cannes and Toronto International Film Festivals. 2016, Japan, DCP, in Japanese with English subtitles, 117 minutes. Recommended for 13+.
