This sumptuous biography of Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), details the mid-career of the revolutionary sculptor—the most brilliant of his era. This period was marked with the tumultuous personal and professional relationship with his immensely talented assistant, Camille Claudel. He acknowledged her as his most able pupil and treated her as an equal in matters of creation. More than a decade of work and passionate engagement ensued, and the personal and professional relationship took its toll on both when it ended. Claudel was scarred from the experience, and Rodin emerged deeply wounded.

The film also recounts Rodin’s relationship with Rose Beuret, his lifelong partner, and the humiliations she faced in light of his deep emotional connection with Claudel and his many affairs with other assistants and models. Rodin was an erotically charged sensualist—a sculptor of flesh in movement, who gave life to the very stone itself. A selection of the Cannes Film Festival. 2017, France, DCP, in French with English subtitles, 119 minutes. Rated R.
