“Making Waves leaves you eager to go hear a favorite movie for the first time.”—David Ehrlich, IndieWire

Few realize the impact of sound on the cinematic experience. Building on the history of sight-and-audio innovations of iconic filmmakers, this documentary features the first generation of recognized sound designers who designed great movies with sound before a frame was shot.

This compelling documentary explores the collaborative relationship between sound designers and the visionary directors with whom they work by entering their creative realms via interviews and clips from their movies. The film also reveals the latest discoveries and advances in audio technology and discusses sound’s transformative power to not only the cinematic experience, but also our lives.

The film features interviews with acclaimed directors including David Lynch, Ryan Coogler, Sofia Coppola, George Lucas, and Barbra Streisand with their most-trusted sound partners Walter Murch, Ben Burtt, Alan Splet, and Ludwig Göransson. A selection of the Cannes and Tribeca Film Festivals. 2019, U.S., DCP, 96 minutes. Recommended for 13+.
