“Celebrating the search for connections between architecture, design, and society, this is a film about fantasy, utopia, and thinking big.”—Jens Balenborg, EPD Film Magazine

Bauhaus Spirit portrays the exciting history of the Bauhaus, the movement that united modern design, art, architecture, and performing arts with communal social living to form an academic discipline and utopian way of life. Combining free imagination and play with strict structure, Bauhaus members included Anni Albers, Marcel Breuer, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, László Moholy-Nagy, and Oskar Schlemmer.   This documentary shows the formulation, failure, and the renewal of a utopian society.  It also presents current social, conceptual, and artistic projects and their relationship to the history of the Bauhaus.  The film uses the questions that the Bauhaus raised to make inquiries into how we would like to live and shape our future.

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of Walter Gropius’ Bauhaus by exploring this influential 20th-centrury

movement’s history, legacy, and continued relevance through interviews with leading cultural and media scholars, urban planners, architects, and researchers. 2018, Germany, in English, German, and Spanish with English subtitles, 90 minutes.  Recommended for 13+.
