In the documentary The Naked Truth: Death by Delivery, journalist Nelufar Hedayat investigates the crisis in Black maternal care, exploring the racial discrepancies that affect pre-natal, birth, and post-pregnancy care that have led to striking numbers of deaths and long-term health issues. Hedayat also interviews many Black-organized programs that are providing culturally competent healing, support, and advocacy for their clients. Produced by Fusion. 2017, 43 minutes. The video is available for screening prior to and after the discussion.

The panel discussion will address the issues raised within the film and local impact of the work of area organizations. Presenters and panelists include:

  • Shawnee Benton Gibson, ARIAH Foundation and Spirit of a Woman Leadership Development Institute
  • Edward Miller, M.D., Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist from U of L Health
  • Carmen Antonetty, Doula and Member of the Southern Birth Justice Network
  • Tamara Etiennne, Labor Land Doula
  • Meka Kpoh, Black Birth Justice Inc.

Discussion is followed by Q&A and the program will conclude with a watercolor activity addressing the experiences around pregnancy and infant loss by Ana’Necia Williams, LCSW, PMH-C, Jabani Bennett with Kristen Williams of Play Cousins and Tamara Jones rounds out the program at 3:45 pm with a closing piece about further resources within the community.
