German director Christian Petzold boldly reimagines the ancient myth of Undine in this suspenseful tale of romance and betrayal in modern day Berlin. Motifs of the Undine emerged from Greek mythology.  Undine is a water sprite in human form who can only attain an immortal soul through marriage to a human. If she is betrayed or her husband remarries, he must die.

Set in contemporary Berlin, Undine (Paula Beer) works as a historian lecturing on urban development. Her life with her current boyfriend is blissful, but when he reveals an infidelity, their fate is sealed as myth catches up with them. She’s ready to resort to murder, but an unexpected new love, in the form of Christoph, an industrial diver (Franz Rogowski), appears, upending the trajectory of the myth.

Their new, blissful, innocent love is filled with initially filled with curiosity and trust. As time goes on Christoph becomes suspicious that Undine may be hiding a troubling past in which she must face her curse once and for all.
