“A study of the strength of will and resilience.”—Pedro Blas Gonzalez, Senses of Cinema

The magnificent Giulietta Masina–who was married to director Federico Fellini at the time–plays an eternally optimistic prostitute Cabiria who traverses Rome with her heart of gold and questionable decision-making skills in this cinematic triumph.

The stubbornly hopeful Cabiria refuses to lose her faith in love.  After escaping death by the skin of her teeth, the hurt and momentarily disenchanted Cabiria continues to confront life with a mixture of naivete and arrogance. Cabiria prays to the Virgin Mary for guidance and perhaps the man of her dreams will appear.

This funny, poignant classic inspired the musical Sweet Charity and is a must-see film. Winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. 1957, Italy, in Italian and Latin with English subtitles, 117 minutes. Recommended for 16+.
