“Sandra Hüller is riveting.”—Beatrice Loayza, The New York Times
Sandra Hüller gives an award-winning performance as a 17th-century female soldier who disguises herself as a man to gain acceptance in a brutal farming community.
In the aftermath of the ferocious Thirty Years’ War, a scarred female soldier dangerously inveigles her way into a strict rural community by posing as a man with an inheritance. Seemingly dispassionate in its watchful, austere monochrome, yet quietly devastating in its unflinching look at gender-based prejudice and intolerance, Markus Schleinzer’s masterful film is another triumph for Hüller.
Rose, while set in the past, addresses issues of power, gender, and identity that are still relevant today. 2026, Austria/Germany, DCP, in German with English subtitles, 93 minutes. Recommended for 16+.
