Filmmakers Suki Hawley and Michael Galinsky—in person

“Wryly satirical without compromising its low-grain verisimilitude.” —J.R. Jones, Chicago Reader

In the early 1990s, filmmakers Suki Hawley and Michael Galinsky (an artist represented in the exhibition Southern Accent), shot their first film project in Louisville. With a premise of a group of laconic young twenty-somethings who steal a van and pretend to be in a band, the film stars a gaggle of Louisville musicians playing themselves. A document of a creative community at the time, the film toured rock clubs and record stores during its release, including Ear X-tacy in Louisville.

The soundtrack is packed with a generous helping of great indie music of the era including Codeine, Freakwater, Slant 6, Boondoggle, Smog, and Kicking Giant. 1994, U.S., video, 81 minutes.

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Southern Accent: Seeking the American South in Contemporary Art.

Post-screening Q&A with filmmakers Suki Hawley and Michael Galinsky by Skype.
