Savage Rose Classical Theatre Company Presents: Double Falsehood, or the Distrest Lovers

Sunday, December 4, 2016,  7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Speed Art Museum

In celebration of the Folger Library’s exhibit First Folio! The Book That Gave Us Shakespeare, on display at the Frazier History Museum, November 10 through December 10, Savage Rose presents a reading of the controversial play Double Falsehood, from 1728, which will take place in the English Renaissance Room.

Double Falsehood takes place in Spain, where wayward young lord Henriquez betrays Violante, leaving her when his passion for Leonora drives him to lure her betrothed, his friend Julio, to court so that Henriquez might win Leonora for himself. Julio is driven mad by his friend’s betrayal and the loss of his beloved and takes refuge in the mountains. Meanwhile, the ruined Violante laments her fate plans to expose Henriquez’s bad behavior and win him back.

The Savage Rose play reading series is an entertaining way to experience rarely produced classic works in a casual atmosphere. The series encapsulates the company’s mission in its purest form: to bring the words of playwrights to the forefront and allow audiences to experience the language of classic drama as it was meant to be heard. No set, no costumes, no director – just the actors and the words in the moment.

Admission is free. Doors open at 6:30 pm.
